Black Snake Science Experiement

E-PORTFOLIO SCIENCE - FIZZ AND FOAM

ACHIEVEMENT OBJECTIVES:
Understanding about science (Nature of Science)
Students will appreciate that scientists ask questions about our world that lead to investigations and that open-mindedness is important because there may be more than one explanation.

Properties and changes of matter (Material World)
L1/2: Observe, describe, and compare physical and chemical properties of common materials and changes that occur when materials are mixed, heated, or cooled.
L3/4: Group materials in different ways, based on the observations and measurements of the characteristic chemical and physical properties of a range of different materials.
L3/4: Compare chemical and physical changes.

BLACK SNAKE SCIENCE EXPERIMENT

MY HYPOTHESIS:
I think the sugar and baking soda will dissolve and will turn into a black tall snake because it burns the sugar.

MATERIALS:
  • Bowl
  • Matches/Lighter
  • Squirty bottle (for meths)
  • Tray
  • Cup
  • Methylated Spirits
  • Sand
  • Sugar
  • Baking soda
  • Water

METHOD:
  1. Put the sand in the bowl and make sure it is flat.
  2. Mix the baking soda and the sugar together in the cup.
  3. Squirt the methylated spirits in the middle of the sand.
  4. Pour the baking soda and the sugar on top of the sand.
  5. Squirt the methylated spirits around the edge of the sand.
  6. Grab a lighter or a match and light the baking soda and sugar on fire.

OBSERVATIONS:
1. I saw fire
2. baking soda and sugar burns.
3. a black snake started to evolve
4. the flames stopped and the black snake stopped.

DIAGRAM:

CONCLUSIONS: When the flame stopped the snake stopped growing.

SUCCESS CRITERIA:
  • Use good colour choice
    • Complimentary colours
    • Blending colours
    • Tinting and shading colours
    • Light and dark colours
  • Use a variety of shapes to make it interesting
  • Make in non-summytrical

Give some examples of how you mixed colours on your Picasso face.
I didn't mix any colours

How have you used blending on your Picasso face?
I don't think I did any blending
How have you used shapes and textures to make your Picasso face interesting?
I made a round circle, the nose is a triangle, my mouth is wiggly.
What do you like best about your Picasso face and why?(think about the success criteria)
My favourite part is the eyes because they stand out
What would you improve or change about your Picasso face? (think about the success criteria)
My mouth could be better

Put some photos of you finished face and any making ones from the folder.
