I am a student at Kaiapoi North School. This is a place where I will share my learning with you. Please note....some work won't be edited - just my first drafts, so there may be some surface errors. I would love your feedback, comments, thoughts and ideas.
Students will appreciate that scientists ask questions about our world that lead to investigations and that open-mindedness is important because there may be more than one explanation.
Properties and changes of matter (Material World)
L1/2: Observe, describe, and compare physical and chemical properties of common materials and changes that occur when materials are mixed, heated, or cooled.
L3/4: Group materials in different ways, based on the observations and measurements of the characteristic chemical and physical properties of a range of different materials.
L3/4: Compare chemical and physical changes.
BLACK SNAKE SCIENCE EXPERIMENT
MY HYPOTHESIS:
I think the sugar and baking soda will dissolve and will turn into a black tall snake because it burns the sugar.
MATERIALS:
Bowl
Matches/Lighter
Squirty bottle (for meths)
Tray
Cup
Methylated Spirits
Sand
Sugar
Baking soda
Water
METHOD:
Put the sand in the bowl and make sure it is flat.
Mix the baking soda and the sugar together in the cup.
Squirt the methylated spirits in the middle of the sand.
Pour the baking soda and the sugar on top of the sand.
Squirt the methylated spirits around the edge of the sand.
Grab a lighter or a match and light the baking soda and sugar on fire.
OBSERVATIONS:
1. I saw fire
2. baking soda and sugar burns.
3. a black snake started to evolve
4. the flames stopped and the black snake stopped.
DIAGRAM:

WHAT WAS MY SPEECH TOPIC:
I did my speech on Sir David Attenborough
